MARCH 3, 2011 KEARNEY COLUMN
Last Saturday was the Heritage Day and Family Day Celebration at the Kearney Community Centre. It was a great time, good food and great entertainment by the Fern Glen Fiddleheads. Thank you to everyone who attended to make this evening a success and a special thank you to the volunteers and councilors for without them there would be not be an evening like this. I showed a slideshow of some family pictures as well as some historical pictures of Kearney – the point was to get people thinking about the Kearney 100 Years Book. Have you purchased your’s yet? If not they are available here at the garage and at other local businesses. Also if your family history is NOT in the book, think about writing one and gathering up those treasured pictures and submitting them to myself, Heather at the garage and I can copy and scan everything and give you back the originals. There is no immediate plan for a new edition of the book, but it would be a lot nicer not to have to be hounding people at the last minute, write it at your leisure now. There I will leave it be for a few weeks now. Fetterley’s Garage was the home to a little bit of excitement on Monday afternoon. No we didn’t get robbed, an unlucky snowmobiler accidently backed his snowmobile through the front window of the garage. This caused a little bit of excitement for Norm who was inside and myself and Tara who were standing at the pumps. I don’t think anyone was more shocked than the snowmobiler though. The main thing, no one was hurt, the window will be replaced in no time. Results of the Kearney Seniors Regular Euchre party on March 1st; Mens High – Willie O’Connor, Mens 2nd – Hank Marshall, Ladies High – Wanda Schamehorn, Ladies 2nd – Verna Rickward, Most Lone Hand – Willie O’Connor, Last Lone Hand – Bill Dodds, XXOO’s – Betty Benville and 50x50 – Delores White. Anyways I found a booklet called How to Save money, time and work in every department of daily living, put out by the Independent Home owned Hardware Store – Huntsville Hardware Ltd. – here a couple of the hints they were giving: You’ll prevent the inside of your salt shaker metal top from rusting if you paint it with ordinary nail polish. When the lacquer is dry, use a darning needle to open the holes from the inside out. Here are three ways to forestall big doctor bills: Nail loose stair treads down tight. See that handrails are sturdy. Paint the top and bottom treads of basement stairs white. A fur should not be hung in a closet while wet, nor should it ever be placed near a heated radiator. These words of wisdom were contained in a booklet purchased for 50cents in 1948.

Welcome To Our New Web Site !!
Hello Everyone !! Welcome to our new website and blog !!

Last Thursday was Earth Day – what did you do to help our environment that day?  I am sad to say that I did not do anything out of the ordinary.  I do feel that I am a good recycler and reuser.  How could I not be, being Charlie Fetterley’s daughter!  I do have a proposition for my readers though; I have a box of wine bottle corks some plastic, but mostly cork.  If someone has a use for them, they are welcome to them.

Please note that Kearney Fire Department has issued a fire ban again.  Until further notice you cannot purchase burn permits.  You can still have a small fire for warmth or food.

Congratulations to Beth & Wayne Bridge and Terry & Fred Follick, who I hear both celebrated their wedding anniversaries this week.

There will be a Ladies Spring Luncheon held at the Birchdale Community Church on Saturday May 1 at 12 noon.  There will be a guest speaker.  Please come and bring a friend.  Donation welcomed.  This event is sponsored by the Birchdale Women’s Ministry.

May is quite an active month for the Kearney Lions Club; May 1 is Adopt-a-highway from 9a.m. to 12noon.  Registration and lunch will be held at the Kearney Community Centre.  For more info contact Jeff at 636-7594.  May 8 is the annual Charlie & Sadie Fetterley 10 km Walkathon.  Registration will be at 9a.m. at the Kearney Fire Hall, where you will be bussed to Scarborough Outdoor Education Centre, where the walk begins.  Pledge sheets can be picked up at the Town Office, Kearney Post Office, Fetterley’s Garage, Kearney Fire Hall, General Store, Bistro or the LCBO.  Lunch will be provided by the Kearney Volunteer Fire Fighters.  For more info call Mike at 636-9324.  May 22 they will be holding the World Famous Black Fly Sale, from 9a.m. to 2p.m at the Kearney Community Centre.  Shop till you drop.  Have a great lunch!  Booth rentals are $15 each.  For more info call Paul at 636-5113 or Elton at 636-5076.

Here are some card party results from April 21st, 1954; The Community Centre Board held a mammoth card party. There were nine tables of euchre with Mrs. T. Bevan winning the high ladies’ score.  Mrs. Nethercott won the cut for low.  Mr. T. Bevan was high man and Mr. H. White won the cut for low.  There was one table of canasta at which Mrs. A. Newman was high scorer and Mrs. S. Murdy low.  Six players contested the cribbage and Mr. Ralph Bice was high with Mr. Ed Belfoy low.

Carole and Peter Parker are back from their extended vacation in Cuba, so keep you ears open for the opening date of Three Billy Goats Gruff – the Candy store.

I am sure most have heard the rumblings of a Bake shop/Deli opening locally.  Cindy Hall and Janice Marshall will be opening Tender Mercies some time this month.  It will be located on the south side of the road coming down Tower hill towards Kearney.  If you have ever come for gas on a Wednesday when Cindy is working, you may have had the honour of tasting some of her home baked goodies.  If you didn’t, now you have to wait for the bakery as Cindy will be too busy to work at the garage.  Keep yours open for more opening day details.

Please note that we are installing a new gas pump at Fetterley’s Garage on May 6th – I have put a notice up that we will be closed.  We will be here but the power will be off sometime as well as no pump to pump gas out of.
